A Message from the Director

Happy Spring, I hope you and your families had a blessed Easter.

Some of the housing team from New Smyrna Beach met with the Assistant Secretary of Public and Indian Housing, the Honorable Ben Hobbs.

Our agency was honored to lead a panel for the Move to Work Conference in Washington D.C. last week speaking on Economic Independence using Work Requirements, Family Self Sufficiency, and Term Limits. Last year our agency had four graduates from the FSS (PATH) program complete their goals in five years. Three of those graduates moved into homeownership using our success model and partners with Southeast Volusia Habitat for Humanity, Executive Director, Mark Billings and the wonderful staff and volunteers. This is a 75% success rate in moving our clients to homeownership. Also, thanks to the former FSS coordinator, June Anderson, and the current PATH Specialist, Aidan Trenn.

The Housing Authority of the City of New Smyrna Beach also joined the newest HUD initiative Work and Dignity. This is a program to use the current PATH program initiative to move families to independent living either through homeownership or increasing income to be self-sustainable without housing assistance. This allows other families to be able to receive the services of the PATH program.

Our agency will be working with partners for those of you who want to peruse a PATH to independence in homeownership. See your PATH specialist, Ms. Aidan, for more information.

I wish you a happy and safe spring. God's blessings on you and your families.

"We are planting seeds to trees we will never see the shade of!"

Teresa Pope

Executive Director

Recent Events

CRC Donations

June Anderson, the CRC Manager, has been hard at work keeping our coffee cart stocked on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. She relies on donations from the community and sometimes supplements the cart with her own groceries. She is sure to have hot coffee, sugar, creamer, hot tea, oatmeal, milk, and cereal for those in need in our community twice a week. Our unhoused and low-income neighbors have come to count on this cart to be there for them and start off their day in a positive manner. If you are interested in checking out the coffee cart for yourself, come visit the CRC on Tuesdays and Thursdays!

Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Information

FSS Information

The Pathways Advancing To Hope (P.A.T.H.) Program is the new name of NSBHA's Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program. We chose this name to reflect what the FSS program is really about. P.A.T.H. is a program designed to help families receiving housing assistance achieve self-sufficiency. Many families in our housing program have big dreams yet little hope. Families participating in the P.A.T.H. program can once again begin to hope, and succeed. With the help of their P.A.T.H. Specialist, participating families will receive one-on-one guidance and support in reaching their S.M.A.R.T. goals. Aidan Anderson, The P.A.T.H. Specialist at NSBHA, has a bachelor's degree in psychology, a certification in Financial Social Work Counseling, and is a certified Family Self-Sufficiency Coordinator. Connecting families to resources and providing Financial Literacy and Credit Counseling workshops are just some of the ways she helps families reach their goals. Reach out to Aidan to learn more!

The Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS)/PATH program can help you save money, continue your education, and connect you to other resources to enhance the self-sufficiency of you and your family. If you have any questions or are interested in the FSS/PATH program, please visit the main office or contact Aidan Anderson

Staff Spotlight

Jonna Kampf, Accounting Manager

Join us in congratulating our wonderful Accounting Manager on 3 years at NSBHA. She began at NSBHA as the Accounting Clerk and was promoted to Accounting Manager in October of 2025. Maybe you have met Jonna when dropping off a rent check or visiting the CRC, though many of our residents never get to see her smiling face.

Jonna works diligently in the background ensuring that staff are paid on time, rent checks are entered into the system accurately and on time, vendors are paid, and a slew of other financial tasks that would give any of us a headache. She never complains and is always happy to help in any way she can. She truly brings joy to the job for all of us.

When she is not at work, she loves to spend time with her large family and her pets.

Community Success Story

Public Housing to Homeownership
Chelsie McMorrow

"My children have always been my reason why-and I know
that's true for so many moms. They push you to dream bigger,
to want better, and to keep going even when things feel hard.
Just remember, your current situation doesn't define your
future-it's only a chapter in your story. Always stay faithful,
because when the time is right, God will open doors no one can
close." -Chelsie McMorrow

Chelsie has been a resident at the Housing Authority of New Smyrna Beach for just over five years. She joined the Family Self-Sufficiency (FSS) Program last year and has since completed seven S.M.A.R.T. goals on her journey to self-sufficiency.

One of her biggest goals was to complete homeownership counseling so that one day she might be able to own her own home. In order to participate in homeownership counseling, a family must achieve a good credit score. Chelsie was able to maintain a credit score high enough to participate in Habitat for Humanity's Homeownership Program. She worked closely with the experts at Southeast Volusia HFH and completed the requirements they set for her.

Now, Chelsie, her son, and her twin daughters have a new home they can call their own. For the first time, each of her twin girls will have a bedroom of their own, no longer having to share. Chelsie has worked so hard for this, and she has earned the home she built. Join us in wishing Chelsie and her children happiness and health in their new home!
